Ice-House Figure

A winter festival has carved this photograph into one block of clear ice. The two people remain two people, standing as they stood, faces still theirs. Clothing is indicated by frosted planes, saw marks, and internal fractures rather than by woven fabric. Features soften a little because ice is translucent, but the likeness must hold. The setting is rebuilt in ice as well. Benches, trees, walls, and ground become carved volumes with cloudy cores. Looking through the sculpture you can see cold daylight and the dark of evening behind it. Surface melt has just started: a bead of water on a chin, a drip at a cuff, not a puddle that dissolves the form. Light it the way ice is actually shown outdoors: tungsten flood against blue dusk, specular hits on the wet faces of the block, a darker core where the ice is thickest. No plastic shine, no jewellery crystal, no snowmen, and no CGI diamond shader.
